Nothing personal?
I saw this floating across Facebook yesterday. This is a typical fundagelical response to a problem that doesn’t actually exist except in the letter-writer’s mind:
Because somehow, identifying as gay or lesbian is somehow the same as being an ax-murder or Islamic terrorist. But it is quite acceptable to be a Christian terrorist, right?
“Please understand that this is nothing personal and I have not singled out just you.” Nothing personal? Except that it IS personal to everyone who has been singled out. You cannot say “You are not welcome here” and then pretend it isn’t personal.
As for the lie that homosexuality is a “sin” — it is only a sin in the eyes of individuals who choose to call it sin. There is nothing intrinsically evil, sinful, or immoral about being gay. It is only in the minds of people who interpret their ancient holy books that way — holy books written centuries before we learned about sexual orientation and the spectrum of normal human sexuality.
Some people would receive such a letter and feel like they’ve been slapped in the face (and, of course, they have been, figuratively). But for someone to put pen to paper and express such a vile and ugly sentiment is actually a benefit. It clearly identifies the letter-writer as an ill-informed bigot. It was sent as a form of punishment (“You can’t come around us until you live the way we approve”), but it is a great benefit — it identifies those toxic individuals a someone to stay away from.
