God as a dog
oh look!!! Today is Blasphemy Rights Day International, set on Sep 30 of each year to coincide with the anniversary of the publication in Denmark of cartoons of Muhammad. That event upset a lot of people. Tough nuts.
Blasphemy (cursing, insulting, ridiculing or profaning a deity) is a victimless crime. Nobody is actually harmed or injured, and nobody should be jailed or punished for the imaginary crime of insulting a deity or religion. People get their feelings hurt when you make fun of their religion, or their religion’s god. So what? Let them be offended on their own time, it is not your concern.
Blasphemy Day has a purpose: the point up the absurdity of criminalizing the free and open criticism of bullshit religions (yes, “bullshit religions” is redundant: ALL religion is bullshit).
Nobody deserves to be physically harmed in ANY way for their beliefs. Nobody should be denied employment, housing, or food because of their beliefs. But many who hold onto certain beliefs seem to have no problem harming others, or denying others the right to work, housing, food, or other necessities and even basic human rights, all in the name of their god or their religion. And that is bullshit.
Why should people be given free pass to use their religion as a weapon against others, while others are denied the right to speak up and criticize those beliefs?
Why should some people think they are immune to criticism of their beliefs? NOTHING WILL HAPPEN IF YOU SAY “GOD DAMN JESUS.” Nothing. The earth will not open and swallow you whole. Lightning will not strike you down because of your words. You will not be infected with plagues for speaking your own opinion.
Here’s the truth: if your beliefs cannot withstanding close scrutiny and challenge, they aren’t worth holding in the first place.
Our Lady of Perpetual Motion, patron saint of prunes, pray for us!
