Bean Mix for
Ray's World Famous
Sunday Bean Pot

Bean Mix

In most large supermarkets you can now find bags of mixed beans, usually packaged with a little foil pouch of chemicals... ummmm, I mean spices and preservatives and chemical artificial flavorings.... at anywhere from $1.59 - $3.72 a pound. Actually the cheap ones at A&P were $1.99 for 20 ounces... and the most expensive I've seen is $2.79 for 12 ounces (Hodgson's Mills), which works up to $3.72 for a full 16-ounce pound).

You will probably only need to do this ONCE, because once you've tried any of the many variations of this recipe, you will want to stock up on your own beans and try a new variation every week, including some of your own experimentations .... which, infact, is how this recipe got it's name: Ray's World Famous Sunday BeanPot -- folks around the world tried the original edition and commented on it!

So here's what you do:

Go to your major supermarket, into the dried bean section. You will find that almost every kind of bean is available in 1-pound bags for about $0.79 per pound, practically HALF the cheapest pre-mixed variety (gosh, this is a no-brainer!!!!). Buy one bag of every kind of bean or legume available:

  • Red Kidney
  • Pinto
  • Black
  • Small White
  • Large White
  • Lima
  • Butter
  • Green Split Pea
  • Yellow Split Pea
  • Red bean
  • Lentil
  • Cranberry Beans
  • Great Northerns
  • Whole Green Peas
  • Green Baby Limas
  • Blackeye
  • Black Turtle
  • Speckled Lima
  • PLUS ANY other bean you find
  • PLUS Pearled Barley

Pour all the dried beans into a large container with a tight fitting lid. You will only use 2 cups of bean mix at a time, so make sure you store the rest of the mix in a cool, dry place.
