Planet Humanism

I think I mentioned the other day (but can’t remember and too lazy to go back and check) that I’d discovered another very cool blog aggregator,  Planet Humanism,  to go along with Planet Atheism.  And I’ve applied as a contributor to Planet Humanism which means more people get to share my opinions!   Because, after all, everyone is entitled to my own opinion, right?

A while back I had mentioned I wanted to spend some time going over the Affirmations of Humanism and haven’t found time to get too far into it.  Nearly all of them, of course, seem like no-brainers, but some people don’t quite grasp them.

The core of humanism, as I understand and apply it, is to accept the human condition and treat each other humanely.  It’s really not so hard.   Basically, it means to apply The Golden Rule, also known as the Ethic of Reciprocity, which has been found in nearly every culture for thousands of years.  It seems ironic that the most vocal opponents of equality and humane treatment are those claiming to act in the name of their religion or in the name of their god.  Isn’t that weird?   They all claim to be a “religion of peace”, but doesn’t peace pretty much imply or encompass the notion of treating people humanely?   Hmmm… go figure.
