wow–Busy weekend!
A quick perusal over at Planet Atheism shows there have been MUCH to talk about in the past day or two. I swear there must be at least three PAGES of posts.
Planet Atheism is not a blog itself, but a blog aggregator, compiling current posts from many atheist blogs. It is most interesting when a particular issue gets covered by several different people simultaneously.
Many of them have mentioned the lawsuit to remove “so help me God” from the Presidential Oath of Office. Good for them, I hope they win. There’s no need for such a ridiculous and offensive phrase. You can read the documents over at Newdow’s Web site. Michael Newdow is the same person who sued to restore the Pledge of Allegiance (i.e., to remove the “under God” bit so that others can once again pledge their allegiance without lying in the process). Several other posts address this one.
I also see several posts on a report of several death threats to Tom Cruise while out promoting his newest film; apparently the basis of these death threats is not because of the content or subject of his movie (killing Hitler), but the fact that he is a Scientologist. <*yawn*> Whatever. I don’t particularly care for his work as an actor, and his religion is a farce. The fact he seems to take it sooooo seriously merely cements his status as an idiot.
I also see a few posts about the latest report on the failure of abstinence-only sex ed, and the “promise” to remain a virgin until marriage. The fact is that such promise bound students are not only as likely to have sex as any other teen, but they are MORE likely to fail to use protection or safe sex practice and thus more likely to become pregnant and/or contract an STD.
Of course there are several other topics covered by the compiled blog posts. PZ posts on many topics, and is worth a daily read. In a recent post on False Equivalence, he rips a new one for the creationists, who seem to think that they use the same evidence as those who teach evolution, but simply reach different conclusions. It goes without saying that creationists LIE about the evidence and approach it from a failed presupposition. PZ is a scientist qualified to speak to the issue better than I, so you can read his post.
The bottom line on it is that evolution is not something you can choose to believe in or not. It’s like choosing whether you need to breathe or not. Evolution is the process by which all of live moves forward. Without it, we wouldn’t be here. You might as well argue that the Sun is not the center of our solar system, or that water isn’t wet. People who say, “I don’t believe in evolution” simply don’t understand it; it’s a failure of the educational system (and the stupidity of ignorant motherfuckers sticking their kids in a private school so they never get a chance at learning about it).
Anyway, if you want to keep abreast of what’s up for discussion, visit Planet Atheism for blog posts pulled in from all over the blogosphere. Good stuff.
