“Freedom is measured by the distance between church and state”

Ebert doesn’t like it, either!

Finally, Roger Ebert has reveiwed Ben Stein’s “Expelled”

The more you know about evolution, or simple logic, the more you are likely to be appalled by the film. No one with an ability for critical thinking could watch more than three minutes without becoming aware of its tactics. It isn’t even subtle.

His review is long, but worth it.   And he agrees with most rational people that Stein’s movie is crap.  Because, you see, it is.   I’ve been following this since last year when PZ and Dawkins were writing about it, showing how they were duped into appearing (they were told it was a different movie entirely, and NOT informed their interviews would be chopped and turned into anti-science bullshit).

The movie is crap and  Intelligent Design/Creationism is a propagandist lie.  And Ben Stein is a liar.   He should stick to hawking eye drops.

And the movie isn’t so much about teaching creationism as it is a documentary to show how Creationism isn’t allowed in the schools… that it was “Expelled”.    The makers of the film use images of Hitler and Nazism to equate evolution with Nazis (WTF?)   (By the way, many people argue against atheism on the basis of Hitler — he was, in fact, a Christian, not an atheist and did what he did because of his religious faith, warped as it was.)

There is a REASON Creationism should not be taught in public schools, and definitley NOT included in any accredited science curriculum.  As Ebert points out, 40 years ago the court determined that Creationism is a religious viewpoint, not science, and it remains so today.

Stein’s movie is a whining rant about discrimination and censorship against Creationism.   It’s not discrimination or censorship.  You wouldn’t try to introduce silicone breast implants as a way to make your car run smoother in a lecture in Auto Shop.   Why would anyone think it is okay to introduce religion into a science class?

Bravo to Roger Ebert!

“Hitler — he was, in fact, a Christian, not an atheist” - you’re kidding, right?

    Nope, no joke:

Hitler seeking power, wrote in Mein Kampf, “… I am convinced that I am acting as the agent of our Creator. By fighting off the Jews. I am doing the Lord’s work.” Years later, when in power, he quoted those same words in a Reichstag speech in 1938.

Three years later he informed General Gerhart Engel: “I am now as before a Catholic and will always remain so.” He never left the church, and the church never left him. Great literature was banned by his church, but his miserable Mein Kampf never appeared on the index of Forbidden Books. He was not excommunicated or even condemned by his church. Popes, in fact, contracted with Hitler and his fascist friends Franco and Mussolini, giving them veto power over whom the pope could appoint as a bishop in Germany, Spain, and Italy. The three thugs agreed to surtax the Catholics of these countries and send the money to Rome in exchange for making sure the state could control the church.

And these are some quotes from Rational Response Squad (which includes a video and other stuff):
“Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord.” – — Adolf Hitler

“Secular schools can never be tolerated because such a school has no religious instruction and a general moral instruction without a religious foundation is built on air; consequently, all character training and religion must be derived from faith…. We need believing people.”

    – Adolf Hitler, April 26, 1933

“I would like to thank Providence and the Almighty for choosing me of all people to be allowed to wage this battle for Germany.”

    – Adolf Hitler

“God gave the savior to the German people. We have faith, deep and unshakeable faith, that he was sent to us by God to save Germany.”

–Hermann Goering, a high level nazi speaking of Hitler

One important Nazi slogan was ‘Kinder, Kirche, Kueche’ ( Children, Church, Kitchen). Nazis used to award Iron Crosses for bravery.

Hitler also said ‘Die zehn Gebote sind Ordnungsgesetze, die absolut lobenswert sind.’ Which means:

‘The Ten Commandments are laws for order, which are totally praiseworthy.’

Hitler detested atheism. He wrote ‘In recent years things have gone so far that patriotic circles, in god-forsaken blindness of their religious strife, could not recognise the folly of their conduct even from the fact that atheist Marxist newspapers advocated the cause of one religious denomination or the other…’ (Hitler’s book Mein Kampf)

“by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord.” - yet another asshole who never took time to look at a Bible. Sorry, I’ll stick in the camp of the thinking Germans - Martin Luther and Deitrich Bonhoeffer.

@Steve: Martin Luther? Wasn’t he the guy who believed animals have no feeling and nailed a dog to a tree? Not someone I’d care to emulate.

Where does it state that Martin Luther ” believed animals have no feeling and nailed a dog to a tree”?

I read that about 30 years ago while I was in the Air Force.
