It’s deja vu all over again!

Last year at this time I was sitting in a make-shift “refugee camp” up the street from my home in New Orleans.  No power, no water, no internet (EEK)… and today when I called to arrange for cable/internet service, they told me it would be September 12 before someone could get to me.   Soooo … [...]

Moving in, moving on!

I spent all of yesterday and today just unpacking.  whew!!!    But it’s good.  The gas and electric were turned on last Friday.  The water was turned on within two hours after I went and signed up for it.   This evening I’m at my daughter’s for just a few minutes to pick up my computer and television.   [...]

I’m a TEXAN!!!

Wow…  what a day it was yesterday…  I’ll have to catch up to that another time.   Along with my sons, there were several local friends who came to help load the truck.   I was mostly well enough packed, but putting new eyes into the mix meant things went even faster.   O’course it didn’t help that [...]

Good morning!

Okay, so the boys (and one of my granddaughters!) got here just after midnight… we took an hour or so to chit-chat and let them unwind from their drive.  I was “wired” as expected, didn’t sleep much, and was up and about around 4:30.  Now I’m all showered and shaved, ready to go.
Time to unplug [...]

Nice evening out

Last night brought a nice evening with friends at Ignatius — a small gathering of forum  friends for dinner, a little beer, and LOADS of chit-chat about this-and-that.   A good and healthy departure from the insanity of packing!   Great evening.
And now, today … Moving Day Minus One.  Gotta start with a run to market for [...]

Will I ever sleep again?

Last night I spent most of the night lying in the dark under a thin blanket pretending I was sleeping, every now and again peeking at the clock to watch the digital display tick the numbers along.  I figured even if my mind was WIDE AWAKE my body should at least lie still and pretend [...]

A pleasant treat!

Last night a couple of friends from my job at the Cancer Center took me out for a farewell dinner at Taqueria Corona, a little Mexican restaurant up Magazine Street.

That’s The Baronness on the left (I mentioned her the other day), and DW is on the right.  Had a marvelous dinner and a couple of [...]

New Orleans Housing Advocates Plan Protests

Here is another interesting article on the status of government housing projects: New Orleans Housing Advocates Plan Protests While HUD Head Declares Fixed Units, which includes this paragraph:
Currently, there are approximately 250-thousand former Louisiana evacuees living in other areas of the country—primarily Texas. Many housing project advocates believe that without the projects many of the [...]

It was a day, alright!

I got myself scheduled for one final dental cleaning before my move, so that I’d be all clean and ready for Houston.
I got rained on going TO the dentist.
The cost of cleanings seems to have gone up a little bit, yet again.  Darn.  Was hoping not to spend so much money.
While cleaning they found a [...]

Next Chapter News
This is the Web forum run by “Mme Octavia” — a former New Orleans resident who moved East a few years back, she scours the news wires from all over to collect anything relating to New Orleans.  She’s been doing this since the storm, almost daily, and sometimes several times a day … [...]

Poor still stunned by Katrina / HURRICANE AFTERMATH: Recovery effort reveals a great divide between New Orleans’ poverty-stricken and wealthy neighborhoods — as affluent areas rapidly rebuild, the Lower Ninth Ward stagnates
It’s a powerful article.    And there are some people who STILL can’t figure out why I’m leaving.

Well… THAT’s weird!

For 3-4 days I’ve been agonizing with my computer.  It has
been
very
s l o w w w …….
I ran my virus checker.  I ran SpyBot.  I ran Ad-Aware.  I did every conceivable thing to figure out what was making the damn computer hang so much, including shutting it off, rebooting … even unplugging everything and shaking [...]

The Sleep Right dental guard

This is the device I got a few years ago for clenching. It is the Sleep Right dental guard from www.splintek.com. It works pretty good. It feels clumsy in my mouth at first, but it really does prevent clenching in the night. In the morning my mouth feels somewhat ‘off’, due to being held [...]

OMG … SEVEN DAYS left

Wow….  At this time next week I will be finalizing all the packing and everything.  Which means the computer will be turned off and packed, as well, and I’m not sure how quickly I will be able to get everything turned back on and get myself online there.   My daughter who lives in that same [...]

Well, alright already! Sheesh!!

At least eleventeen of you have written me privately, thoroughly chastising me and threatening me with utter disownment if I don’t publicly reveal my moving date.
Hehehehe… no, not really.   But some have, in fact, inquired.   I wasn’t planning to get specific until next week as the day is closer.
The plan is for my [...]

Packing Heat!

Well, no, I don’t mean I’m “packing heat”.  I mean I’m packing in this friggin HEAT!   Holy Mother of God, it is seriously hot….  Here’s the picture for the time being:

Temperature:   96.8 °F  / 36.0 °C
Humidity: 47%
Dew Point: 73 °F / 23 °C
Heat Index: 107 °F / 42 °C

Plenty hot enough for packing, eh?   And [...]

Mental Health in New Orleans

Okay, this is a sort of serious note.
Yesterday, a person attempted to commit suicide-by-cop (i.e., creating a situation i which a cop would be forced to shoot or kill him).  As it turned out, he got a tazer instead, and will be charged with various crimes as well, since he used his car to ram [...]

I have a DATE!!!

Woo-hoooo!
A DATE!
A real DATE!
oh….   no…. I didn’t mean THAT kind of date!   Get your head out of the gutter.   I meant I have a date on the calendar when the U-Haul truck will be loaded and I will be OUT OF NEW ORLEANS!!!!!   Woo-hooo!
AND, the best part … it is BEFORE the [...]

Tuesday’s Turmoil Terminated!

Okay, so I had two options from which to choose:  I could continue wondering when I’d be getting my funding or I could call and see what the status is.
Part of me is always confident there are no mistakes in the universe, everything is working out exactly as it should.  I have been around long [...]

Today is Monday, right?

Okay, it’s been another weird couple days.  I don’t feel “sick” or anything, just not really on top of my game.
I made a shipping run this morning and on the way back stopped for a couple things at the A&P.  While in there I suddenly got a wild hair up my butt about cooking something [...]
