My DNA Results
Prompted by inquiring minds (Hi Lisa!), yes, I just got my DNA results back on Friday.
Turns out I’m 57% Scotch, and 43% Cherokee! I guess that makes sense — Mother was a lush, and Dad was built like a Jeep.
No, but seriously, no real surprise here, I pretty much figured I’m as white as can be. It’s a large image, but you can click it to see full size. Mostly British, with some Irish, Scot, and Welsh, plus some Eastern European.
The cool thing is that it can match to other possible relations. It confirmed a relationship with my sister (duh), as well as two of my first cousins.
There are actually several dozen DNA matches, including first cousins on up to possibly 4th-6th cousins, which would go back 7 generations.
I did see one with a name I recognized (Ingalls) – so I wrote him and he confirmed his grandmother was Vena Whiting. She, along with my grandfather and great uncle (and a few other siblings) were the offspring of Alice Josephine Ingalls, who was a cousin of Laura Ingalls. Since he’s written me a tiny bio, I wrote back and told him about me, and my work as a yarn dyer. Whattaya know — his wife is working on a Stephen West pattern, and his sister just connected with me on Ravelry since she is also a knitter. 🙂
I have a lot of work left to do, in order to flesh out the family tree, and I know there will be a lot of interesting stories along the way.
